Site Updated :: August 20, 2007
SAMSBL is a league of adult amateurs who play baseball (real hardball) in age divisions of 18 & over, 25 & over, 35 & over, 45 & over, and 55 & over.  The SAMSBL is a member of the national organization known as the Men's Senior Baseball League/Men's Adult Baseball League (MSBL/MABL). The league is for men who love the game of baseball. SAMSBL is in its second decade of existence. We have tryouts once a year in February. We all pay to play from mid-March until August for league games (about 21 games) on weekends. Tournaments are extra and usually occur over the major holidays throughout the summer. The grand finale is the National World Series in Phoenix, AZ during October.

•Too many plays are occuring where baserunners and defensive players are making contact with each other during a play. SAMSBL Rule 4.05 covers the many circumstances of Collisions on the field. The Purpose of the Rule is to avoid Injuries. Umpire's Judgment is the key factor in the play. Each League Member is responsible to avoid collisions so as not to intentionally hurt the opponent. Baserunners are expected to slide (cleats down) or "give it up" early. Most of the plays occur at 2nd and 3rd Base; however, running down the 1st Base line, runners are expected to avoid colliding with the defensive players. Rule 4.05 covers the event of plays at the plate. Runners are expected to slide while Catchers are expected to allow a path to the plate for the runner. All League Members are to re-read SAMSBL Rule 4.05 (or our entire set of Rules) found on our web page under the Link INFORMATION/League Forms, 2007 League Rules.

•Many league members are beginning to think of tournament teams for 2007. The SAMSBL has given tremendous support to national tournaments. The projection for this year is another 13 teams will travel to Phoenix or Florida in October and November. Generally, a player's word has kept him from being recruited from one team to another. In recent years, some teams have voluntarily swapped players among themselves to have a better mix of talent and personalities. As the SAMSBL gains more experience and exposure on the national scene, more of our league members would like to participate in the efforts. Our league success over the last 5 years brings us to the doorstep of a good problem to have--keeping our good players from being recruited to another local tournament team.

The last three weeks have seen us all play a lot of baseball. Many have played mid-week and during the weekends with some having four games in six days. Most have been with a break of some kind, but a few of us have played three games in one day, by choice. With the recent record-setting heavy rains, the pent-up demand just to play is starting to be satisfied now. The Managers and Players of this League are to be commended for responding when and how they did to play ball. Each knew what it was going to take both in endurance and time-commitments. With very few exceptions, all teams demonstrated their resolve to play by simply wanting to know "where to next?" Even our Field Superintendants, the ones who have the keys to the entrance gates, were pulling for us and were willing to help to get us on ball diamonds. We transfered 5 games on ten minutes notice from one site to another. And, we dodged a bullet when the high-level acquifer was threatening to shut down the use of UIW due to bubbling springs. We have a great league, one that I hope you are all proud of. We have great outside support. Porky, Bruce, Earnie, Mun, DD, Joe, Barry, Manny, Curtis, David, and Albert all put in the sweat and made the decisions so we could play. It is a special pleasure to work with men like that. And, it is a special pleasure to just to be around the men in our League. I hope everyone knows that we are blessed to have what we have. The SAMSBL is truely unique.

The near-future, weather-wise, looks stable enough to plan our remaining baseball schedule. However, for the first time in our 16 year history, we are going to be playing some league ball into September. We have always avoided this time period on a large scale for two main reasons: Hunting and Football seasons. Many players simple change their priorities around this time of the year. For those who wish to play, we will have a Fall Ball Season. The age bracket will be 18+. Several World Series-bound teams will be opponents for the Fall Ball teams. The Cost is $100.00 per player for about 8-10 games between September 14 and October-late. One team, two teams, or more will be accomodated if interest is shown. Call the League number to commit.

Managers are being asked if they are going to commit to the 2008 League. More details will be published here, shortly. But so far, each manager asked, has indicated a positive response. After each manager is queried, a detailed list of the 2008 League will be shown. A Managers' Meeting will be held in November 2007 for the next year's teams.

The 2007 HARDBALL Year Book Issue is calling for team information by mid-September. Each Manager is asked to provide information on his team mates, significant plays or unique situations that others in the country would be interested in reading about. It is always good policy to mention each team member by name in these reports.

2007 Awards Banquet
Several hundred people witnessed a very powerful 2007 Awards Banquet. The SAMSBL celebrated a successful 2006 in style Saturday night with ballplayers dressing up and their ladies looking even better. Pedrotti's North Wind Ranch was the location, and its main banquet hall provided the perfect atmosphere for our event. The dinner was excellent, and the cash bar allowed those who wanted to unwind, the opportunity to do so with their favorite beverage. Wayne Hand, 45+ Cubs, was the Master of Ceremonies. Though he only had tea, he was loose from the start and set the right tone for the evening. His natural mannerisms and retorts for the occasion have always been humorous and uplifting. However, we all learned that, once he was in the spotlight, his personality really shined. He kept us laughing.

The League All Star games will be held on Friday, September 21 and Saturday, September 22. Each team is asked to vote for the most deserving players to represent them. Watch this space for any updates for the All Star games.
The SAMSBL will host the 2007 Alamo Classic during the Labor Day Holiday with a Managers' meeting Friday night at 8:00 PM, August 31. Each team will be offered 4 games (2 on Saturday, Sept 1 and 2 on Sunday, September 2), weather permitting. The Championship games will be played on Monday, September 3. The age brackets will be 18+, 25+, 35+, 45+, and 55+ if enough teams commit. The Cost is $75.00 per player with 15 players minimum. Interested teams submit $500 or more deposit by June 30 to PO Box 690093, San Antonio, TX 78269. Look at this space often during the next few weeks for more details.

The Labor Day Alamo Classic will be held September 1, 2, & 3. The League will not play that weekend, only tournament teams. Just about any group of players may pay to enter this tournament. The youngest player on the squad dictates the age division that team will play in. The schedule will be offered about August 20.
